Diary of a Wimpy Kid #5 : The Ugly Truth

Yesterday I had eye pain so I couldn’t read at all. I had to close my eyes tight all day. Today’s the election day. Fortunately, when I waked up early in the morning, I felt better and went out. There was a long line to vote when I arrived at the polling station around 6 a.m. After finishing casting a ballot, I walked a little. Early birds song and it made me happier than before. What a bright sunshine! In April I have a plan to read the Wimpy Kid series with my big niece. I just read the book five, but I don’t know when she starts reading. It reminds me that I didn’t have enough book to learn English when I was her age. The Reader’s Digest or Danielle Steel’s novels were all I got in my hand. Sometimes I ask myself ‘Would I have enjoyed reading a lot if I had had many books like now?’ My answer is Absolutely Not. Besides, as I have been reading the Wimpy Kid, it hit me how I was in college and what I did in my 20s. Making friendsor becoming a grow-up is no piece of cake. Rowley’s parents hired a regular playmate for his son. It looks like they might buy friendship or partnership. I think they made big mistakes and misled his son. Accordingly, parenting is a major matter. In the book five, it deals with the adult’s responsibility, in particular, being a parent. As you know, Greg have so much curiosity about being an adult man. He wanted to grow up fast and freely enjoy social life. On the contrary, he still depended on mom and needed her help anytime. Greg’s mom went back to school and spent the most time in the library. I really wonder what she was studying. She isn’t a full-time mom any more. Hiring a domestic help(or maid) isn’t so simple. Greg experienced that the house without mom is very uncomfortable. I also know the air difference between being with and being without mom.Above all, this purple book talks a lot about the family gatherings. Family basically demands someone’s devotion and suffering. Greg has close relatives and family reunions. Staying in the one house and attending family events arebig things. Giving up from the weekend’s rest to the private life. At the beginning of the story, Greg envied Rowley’s pimp with his narrow mind. As time went by, he changed his mind and embraced(explored) his being more completely.# Now that I’m getting older, I need to start being more “responsible.” (71) # Being a mother or a father is a big responsibility. (98)# Gammie told me that most kids my age are in a big rush to grow up but that if I was smart I’d enjoy the ride while it lasts. (209)# I love my relatives and all, but there’s only so much family togetherness I can take.
